  1. “Now first, did this silver belong to us?”

Madame Magloire did not answer; after a moment the bishop continued.

“Madame Magloire, I have for a long time wrongfully withheld this silver; it belonged to the poor. Who was this man? A poor man evidently.”

“What is monsieur going to eat from now?”

“How so! Have we no tin plates?”

“Tin smells.”

“Well, then, iron plates.”

“Iron tastes.”

“Well,” said the bishop, “then, wooden plates.”

  1. “Jean Valjean, my brother: you belong no longer to evil, but to good. It is your soul that I am buying for you. I withdraw it from dark thoughts and from the spirit of perdition, and I give it to God.”
